Castle of Agia Mavra
The imposing Castle of Agia Mavra overlooks the harbor of Lefkada, guarding centuries of history and memories. Built in the 14th century by the Venetians, the castle testifies to the strategic importance of the island in the Ionian Sea. Over the centuries, it passed into the hands of successive conquerors — Venetians, Ottomans, and Venetians again — who reinforced and transformed it into a significant fortress.
Walking along its walls, you feel the stones transporting you to a time filled with wars, legends, and heroism. It is said that during a siege, the defenders repelled the attackers using local mysterious herbs that gave them strength and endurance, making them seem almost invincible.
The view from the top is enchanting: the endless blue of the sea and the town of Lefkada stretch out beneath your feet. Inside the castle, you will discover old buildings, remains of fortifications, and hidden paths that stir the imagination.
Inside, there is also the Church of Agia Mavra, dedicated to the island’s patron saint, with a rich history dating back to the Ottoman period and restored during the 19th century.
Additionally, in the eastern section of the castle, there is a museum displaying exhibits related to the castle’s history, architecture, and daily life, including maps, everyday objects, and religious relics.
The Castle of Agia Mavra offers a unique opportunity to experience the history and culture of the island through an authentic monument that combines natural beauty with historical depth.
