Lefkada Public Library
In the heart of Lefkada, in the neoclassical building at 11 Rondogianni Street, the Public Library stands as a guardian of knowledge and art. Once a luxurious residence of the Zoulinos family and later a branch of the National Bank of Greece, today it houses rare collections, including 17th-century engravings and stunning Ionian icons by painters such as Doxaras and Ventouras.
One of the library’s most enchanting areas is the icon gallery, where visitors often find themselves mesmerized by the blend of religious devotion and artistic perfection. It is said that a local painter, inspired by these icons, left his mark on Lefkada’s contemporary art scene.
The library is open to all, with free entry.
Opening hours:
- Tuesday: 11:00 – 19:00
- Wednesday to Friday: 08:30 – 14:30
- Saturday: 08:30 – 13:30
Charamogleios Library
At 1 A. Skiadaresi Street, the Charamoglou Library is a true treasure of Lefkadian culture. Its founder, Aristotelis Charamoglis, began in 1973 with the passion of collecting everything valuable about Lefkada—books, photos, documents. With over 40,000 items, the library has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records.
An interesting story tied to the library is how Charamoglis himself used to visit old homes and speak with elderly locals to gather rare manuscripts and photographs—thus preserving Lefkada’s memory from oblivion. His dedication became a model for many younger researchers.
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday, 09:00–13:00 and 17:00–19:00
Admission: Free
Nikos Svoronos Library
Very close to Charamogleios Library, also on A. Skiadaresi Street, is the Nikos Svoronos Library, dedicated to the great Lefkadian historian. Svoronos, who devoted his life to the study and documentation of the island’s history, donated his collection—manuscripts, personal books, and objects—to this space.
One of his favorite items was an old diary with notes on daily moments and significant events in Lefkada, offering rare insights into 20th-century island life.
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday, 09:00–13:00 and 17:00–19:00
