Lefkada Knives
Andreas Malakasis – Knifemaker
My name is Andreas Malakasis (Balomenos). I was born in Athens but I live in Lefkada where I come from. I have been involved in knifemaking and especially in the manufacture of the traditional Lefkadian knife (Porsaniko) for the last ten (10) years.
It is a tradition with a long history, related to the period of the Venetian occupation of the Ionian Islands (1684 – 1789).
The knives are made in the traditional way, using improvised tools as I wish to contribute to the preservation of a long-standing and unique art.
The handles of the knives are made of brass and the blades are made of forged steel 5160-52100.
I learned the art of the Lefkadian knife from one of the last old masters, Aristotle Vlachos (Zloumis), whom I respect and thank.
