The Churches of Lefkada: A Journey through History and Art

Lefkada is renowned for the richness and variety of its churches, which testify to the island’s spiritual and artistic heritage. Most were built between the 17th and 18th centuries, bearing Venetian architectural influence combined with traditional Ionian painting and elaborate wooden icons covered in gold leaf.

These sacred monuments host incredible art works by famous iconographers such as Doxaras, Patsaras, and Ventouras, while many also preserve imposing marble tombs of prominent local personalities.

Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni

Dedicated to the island’s protector, the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni is the most significant religious monument of Lefkada. Built on the site of an ancient marble temple of Artemis, the monastery is linked with stories and traditions dating back to early Christianity.
According to tradition, in the 5th century AD, the iconographer Callistos received a miraculous vision, painting the image of the Virgin Mary that now adorns the sanctuary. The monastery was rebuilt in the 19th century after devastating fires during the Venetian rule, impressing with architecture influenced by Zakynthos and the ornate iconostasis of 1886 by sculptor Prosalendis.
From its location, the view embraces the olive groves, the lagoon, Lefkada town, the Ionian Sea, and the mountains of Epirus and Acarnania, offering a breathtaking landscape.
