The Churches of Lefkada: A Journey Through History and Art
Lefkada is renowned for the richness and variety of its churches, which bear witness to the island’s spiritual and artistic heritage. Most were built between the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting the influence of Venetian architecture, combined with traditional Ionian painting and elaborate wooden icons gilded with gold leaf.
These sacred monuments house works by renowned icon painters such as Doxaras, Patsaras, and Ventouras, while many have also preserved imposing marble tombs of prominent figures from the island.
The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, dedicated to the island’s patron saint, is the most important religious monument on Lefkada. Built on the site of an ancient marble temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, the monastery is linked to stories and traditions dating back to the early years of Christianity.
According to tradition, in the 5th century AD, the iconographer Callistus received a miraculous vision while painting the icon of the Virgin Mary that now adorns the sanctuary. The monastery, which was rebuilt in the 19th century following devastating fires during the Venetian occupation, impresses with its architecture, which bears influences from Zakynthos, and its elaborate iconostasis from 1886, the work of the sculptor Prosalendis.
From the monastery’s location, the view takes in the olive grove, the lagoon, the town of Lefkada, as well as the Ionian Sea and the mountains of Epirus and Acarnania, offering a breathtaking landscape.
